Penn & Teller
Preaching to the Choir
Do you believe in magic? You
might after an evening at the
church of Penn & Teller
inside Rio Hotel & Casino.
From the opening curtain to
the dreamlike finale, the
legendary duo challenges your
assumptions about illusion,
reality, and the limits of
perception.
For five decades, Penn
Jillette and Teller have
proselytized the masses with a
signature blend of mindbending magic, sharp humor,
and intellectual curiosity,
occasionally lifting the veil of
secrecy to reveal the trick
behind the trick. Somehow,
those revelations only deepen
the mystery.
Onstage, Penn Jillette, the
taller and more boisterous
half of the partnership,
shepherds the audience
through a revival of illusions,
audience participation, and
cold, hard truths about logic,
probability, physics, and
mathematics. With the
charisma of a tent preacher
and the skepticism of a
scientist, he delivers each
lesson with equal parts
showmanship and
irreverence. Meanwhile,
Teller, the silent apostle of the
act, pulls at the threads of
reality with head-scratching

feats of sleight of hand that
seem to defy explanation.
It’s a formula that has
endeared the famed
illusionists to generations of
Las Vegas audiences. Their
residency recently celebrated
25 years at the Rio, and the
show’s enduring popularity
earned the duo another
multi-year contract extension.
While the show begins at 8
p.m., arrive early and settle
into the atmosphere. The
Mike Jones Duo warms up the
congregation with a magical
set of jazz standards as Jones
works his own brand of
prestidigitation on the baby
grand piano and Jillette
grooves on the upright bass.
Together, they cook. Jones
also performs the
meticulously orchestrated
dreamscape that underscores
the evening’s onstage wonder.
By the final curtain, Penn &
Teller haven’t simply
performed a magic show.
They’ve invited you into a
playful examination of belief
itself. Whether you’re a
skeptic, a believer, or
somewhere in between, Penn
& Teller offer a reminder that
wonder still has a place in the
world. On a Las Vegas
vacation, that’s magic worth
believing in. — VV
